Our community in Decatur, AL is overflowing with great summer activities this year. We’re looking forward to a long list of adventures this summer. Here are some of the things we’re most looking forward to doing.
1. Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic
The Hot Air Balloon Festival is a can’t-miss event here in Decatur. Join the fun Memorial Day Weekend on May 27th and 28th at Point Mallard Park, 2901 Point Mallard Cir SE. Food vendors, a motorcycle show, a car show, and more will happen during this first summer weekend.
The best time to view the balloons is either early in the morning, at around 6:00 am. Alternatively, late in the afternoon from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm is also a great time. Note that this event is not great for children under three years old due to the noise. Everyone 19 and under will require a parental waiver.
2. Spirit of America Festival
The big fireworks display for July 4th is a major event for Decatur and continues on at 2901 Point Mallard Dr. SE. This family-friendly event has been happening since 1967 and includes parades, live music, and pageants. There are family games and competitions in the fields earlier in the day.
Food trucks and craft vendors are expected to attend. There is also an annual talent show. Fireworks are expected to start at 9:00 pm.
3. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge
When you live in Decatur it’s easy to forget just how great the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is. A great activity this year is to head out for a short hike in the refuge. Flint Creek Trailer is a little over a mile long and a perfect chance to view some wildlife. The refuge offers hunting, fishing, birding, hiking, boating, and horseback riding for visitors.
Come on out to 3121 Visitor Center Road and get some great photo opportunities to remember this summer.
